Modern Alchemical Art
The King and Queen represent several definitions. They King stands for the sun (gold), while the Queen stands for the moon (silver). They represent the opposites in the perennial alchemical concern with the reconciliation of opposites. The King holds up three fingers next to the Queen’s three flowers, indicating that the process must be repeated three times. The wolf jumping over the fire represents antimony, a corrosive metal. The old, peg-legged man on the right, a symbol for Saturn (lead), represents fire/death. The King is to be fed to the wolf, which is then to be burnt. Through this process, the King will be liberated and rendered fit for the process that is referred to as the Great Work.
